In the past couple of years, we have heard of many people who we know personally or celebrities who follow a strict vegan diet. Ever wondered what veganism is or what it includes? What is the difference between veganism and vegetarianism? Do we have to leave delicious food? Who can follow this diet?

Veganism is when you don’t eat any animal product or food that uses or contains any animal product, cruelty-free products. People who follow a vegan diet not only exclude meat from their diet but also eggs, dairy products, and honey. It is not only about food but also about lifestyle, people who follow veganism don’t use any product derived from animal, starting from a toothbrush to soap to clothes.

The word ‘vegan’ was derived from ‘vegetarian’. The only difference between a vegan diet and a vegetarian diet is that a vegan diet excludes dairy products, honey, or other products derived from animals (except meat, chicken, and seafood) and a vegetarian diet includes dairy products, honey, or other products derived from animals.

The concept of veganism is not new; it was coined in 1944 by a small group of vegetarians who broke away from the Leicester Vegetarian Society in England to form the Vegan Society.

This concept emerged because of many reasons, firstly Ethics, people following a vegan diet believe strictly in their morals and ethics. They wanted to cherish their lifestyle without harming the animals and sending them to slaughtering houses. Secondly, for a healthy lifestyle. Many people are allergic or gain weight from dairy products and meat.  Thirdly, to contribute to protecting the environment. Killing and keeping animals away from their habitat leads to dysfunctioning of the biodiversity.

Now you may think that this kind of lifestyle will be so boring and people compromise in their food, but no; on the contrary, a vegan diet happens to be more delicious. There are many amazing recipes and many alternatives available. For example, instead of using milk, we can use almond milk or coconut milk, or soy milk.

People of any age group and profession can go vegan. It is a myth that an athlete or any sportsperson has to eat meat to gain strength, but it is not true. Sportspeople like Serena Williams and Virat Kohli follow a vegan diet.

We can try some vegan recipes and see if we can replace them with what we are eating. But we have to make sure that we are getting the desired amount of nutrients.
