Hey I got promotion lets go out and celebrate at some nice café or restaurant or club!!! Now a days celebrations means to go out for a treat with friends and family and have all time favorite food which is loved by all, fast food or we can say Junk food. No celebration is complete without this junk foods. Gone are the day where celebration also meant spending time and interacting at home with your loved ones, now celebration is heading straight to favourite pizza place or some burger joint or some café.
What is is junk food ?? They are nothing but highly processed food with minimum nutritional value and full of transfat, salt, sugars and refined product. All these attributes make them more attractive and people are tempted to eat. But is this really helpful for you??? The answer is a big NO!!
Junk foods are unfit to the health and one who practice to eat junk foods calls so many disorders to his/her health. It may cause heart diseases, cancer, early ageing, high blood pressure, bone problems, diabetes, mental disorders, liver disorders, digestive system problems, constipation, diarrhoea, heart attack, prostate and breast cancer, osteoporosis, and so many health disorders.
Apart from health disorders junk food consumption also affects your work productivity also. Have you ever noticed how was your work performance after comusmption of junk food or fast food in lunch instead of healthy meal during office hour?? Researches has shown that people are less productive when they have processed food during office lunch hour rather than healthy meal. It affects our mental abilities. Eating junk food would give immediate rise in energy but then you would notice a slump in energy and cognitive function, but that is not in a case of healthy meal.
In movies it is shown that female character always eating a bucket of ice cream when she is heart broken or sad and its seen and observed in real life too eating sweet gives that instant lift and rise in sugar levels but after that instant rise there is fall of blood sugar, and you end up eating that few extra calories for few minute of pleasure and also harmful for the body and brain function. Junk food are always preferred due to this instant feel good factor and also as its prepared quickly and one can save time. The tsunami of junk food has struck the entire world. It has wreaked havoc on the health of people, especially of children. Obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, cholesterol imbalance, headaches, depression, dental problems, etc, never ever abounded as much before the advent of junk foods as they do now.
So what can we do to stop this tsunami of junk food and arrest the growth of this junk food giant???
· Plan your meal in advance. This is specially for college going and working people who decide what to eat when they are really hungry and due to lack of time they end up eating junk !!Deciding what to eat will always help you to have a healthy meal instead of junk food .
· Instead of having big lunch or dinner, have frequent meals that is grazing on healthy munchies during the day. Many working counterpart will say how is it possible or college going would say the same, but as you take small tea or coffee break or bunk your class have healthy snack along instead of some smoke or cookies or mini cakes from nearby café. So what are the options?? Fruits, dry fruits, mix nuts and seed, coconut water, buttermilk, smoothies, roasted snacks anything you can choose.
· Carry your meal with it. It’s the new in thing so don’t shy away carrying a dabba with you when you venture out of the home for work or to attend college.
Being a nutritionist even I have craving for junk food but I restrict that for once a week. It’s always said that” you are what you eat”, so for better mental functioning and good health choose your meal wisely and don’t get stuck in this “junk food tsunami”.
